Well we as a social animal can't go it alone , we need the support of others,
Now it becomes an issue of which society,group to join. If you cannot live in, work with the a particular one , are you free to opt out and join another.
By joining another , one as : the froggie: said can be free within the rule of law , as defined by the society or people in that group.
Now in a perfect , symbiotic world , the checks and balances even out and everyone benefits from the group as a whole , everyone gives to that group as well.
If things get out of balance, as they have done in western americanized society's ,greed being a major culprit, then depending on how the energy is flowing in the system , call in money , production wealth whatever, this will leave some people in different states ,
Now if the society is based ideals that are not conducive to human happiness at its basic level , all will have to make compromises , some may think they can adjust , but in reality , can they?
The analogy of a forest , the wild wood everyone struggles , but in a well coppiced wood everything thrives.
Usually the tallest trees are cut back to allow sunlight to the forest floor , at the moment this isn't happening and most people are struggling,

Absolutely... but why do you have to choose to be a part of any particular society? Why not be a part of all society's (or none, same diff?) and choose to live by your own law? After all, that's what we do irrespective of the laws that "govern" any particular society and unless I'm very much mistaken, society is comprised of human beings, most of whom break the odd law and most of whom live by their own laws.
