I don't think the system matters? Same people, same positions, same goals etc... only the voting system has changed... the bad shit may well prevent the good shit from getting done. Although as blue rider points out, I haven't seen any good shit happen in a long time, just deck chair shuffling.

True... but I do wonder if not toeing the party line is job suicide? Nahhhhh, we're here to be told what we have voted for and to STFU or vote in 3 years time once the damage is done.
    I didn't think!!! I experimented!!!

I think the time has passed for a Grand Coalition (which was talked about a few years ago).
There was a time when Labour and National were almost indistinguishable in the centre, but I think that’s passed. Say what you like about Shearer, but he has made Labour more distinct doctrinally (with some help from his Green pals).

    Self interest in politics?
    No
    Surely not

    Seriously, were you born yesterday?
Human nature is all about self interest.
You complaining about self interest is a self interested action on your behalf.
And as for corruption, that's all in the eye of the beholder.

I doubt any of them had accounts at Gold Coast Savings Bank either.

It wouldn't surprise me if that little fruit salad group doesn't turn out responsible for the Fontera contamination scare!
A little irresposible political sabotage on our current "clean green image" would be right up some of their supporters ally!

Maybe true! In a fucked up world it's only natural that a little country like ours will struggle to keep up or be heard!

Little people from a little country with little idea about what's going on or what to do about it!

If we changed the leaders every day until everyone had had a go at being the leader there would still only be little change!

So there you have it, the people we have there now is about as good as it gets internationally.

Internally it isn't really much different and your kidding yourself if you think that any of them "really care" about the weakest members of our society!

The only consistent thing that I have noticed since the 1940's is that they appear to have got worse and have increased their numbers!

As far as the politician goes - not toeing the line does go badly for them, eg John A Lee, or more recently Marilyn Waring

This is common and will become a much larger issue in the future.

People fail to see that the more "complex" a procedure is, the less that it will be complied with.

Make a simple system and people will use it immediately. Government and local body bureaucracy are classic examples of creating procedures that essentially force individuals to disobey the rules due to them being so complex you need an Inuit guide, map, compass & GPS to work out where to even begin.
