Where to get picture frame glass?

My winter project is to start doing something I've had in the back of my mind for a few years. I want to start making frames for some of our photos and Mrs Oakies cross-stitches. I've got the tools and hopeully, the skills ... but I've been unable to fnd where you buy the glass for the frames. Google has NOT been my friend.

Any ideas? ... Christchurch based preferably.

Have a look at the second hand window market . because your doing a hobby, old glass can make it just that bit more interesting. Take the frame measurements to the second hand window dealers, they will happily cut you the size you want at a fraction of the price for new glass.
remebering that now glass has to be a min thickness and sometime safety rated for homes, so they could have a large supply of glass they have difficulty selling.
The Pump House in Tuam street comes to mind. Go there and ask for Paddy Snowden, its his Indian that hangs from the roof above the service counter.

Any glass supplier will cut and sell what you want. Or buy a sheet and a class cutter and cut to suit. It's pretty cheap for framing. I had that glass place on Fitzgerald Ave cust me a circle of glass a while back.

But the yellow pages in your own phone book might be more of a help. Ask for Non reflective glass ... it is bloody good in picture frames.

proper picture frame glass is non-reflective, or at least, *less* reflective. Nontheless, any competent glazier should be able to source.

I have about a dozen things that need custom frames and glass (shirts to posters to photos).. I was going to have a go at doing it myself but if your a dab hand at it - fancy a little bit of mates rates/bargain work? PM me.. I haven't looked into it yet but assumed getting each one custom made at a shop would be horrendously expensive

Don't know if I'm a dab hand or useless yet. Hopefully I'll know in a couple of months. Mrs Oakie did get something professionally framed a few years ago. It was a bit bigger than A4 and cost her over $100. A mate of mine got something about 800 x 200 done last year and all up it was $600.

There is a guy selling a job lot of frames om TM for $10. Probably worth getting if there are a few of the size I want in there.

Best not to use old window glass and also old glass can be a bastard to cut. Best to make up the frame and take it to the glass merchant and say "make it fit into this"... much easier to get it right first time.

I used 4mm thick glass for a greenhouse. I would have thought for picture framing you could go for less than that?

I'd second buying new glass rather than recycling. Cutting it to size can be a satisfying process as well.

household glass will be about 3x thicker than you'd want, but would create some artsy "chic" kind of effect with it (not so good for light transmission, though...), especially if you made up "miniature window" styled frames. try raiding opshops and shit. they normally have heaps.

glass cutters are available at various places and a piece of piss to use, can do curves and shit aswell if the glass is kind...
