When I built one some time back, I cleaned up and shot peened the rods. It dropped an exhaust valve insert cooling after a dyno session judging from the wreckage.....
When we ran the 500's I did the same with the rods for my motor and Tony's - never broke one and Tony's made well over 80 at the wheel on Nitro. Both pulled over 13 grand.
Preparation is the key.
