I was in Woodbourne in '75. My Kodak 126 took colour film ...
Always something to see on the flightline.

I don't seem to have taken any pix of Bristols. As well as the noise it was, "Fill up the oil and check the gas!"
I got these pix on an exercise at Waiouru in Jan/Feb '75. It was the year the cork popped on Ngauruhoe and sent an ash cloud to 20,000ft, (as per pic 1 & 2)
At the time 14 sqn had two FAC (Fwd Air Control) Harvards, but it wasn't long after that, that the powers that be realised they were just bait and canned the idea that a slow old dunger could survive as a mobile viewing platform to guide Skyhawks onto targets.

FAC was often done in Vietnam in Cessna's (or smaller) ... Google "Bird Dog" ...
I was Army and ventured into Dip flat a few times. I went up Ring buster ridge a few times. My flight time in Bristols was regular ... a few Operation Freight train's in them over Molesworth stn.
Another trip out to Raul Island supply dropping. Such flights with the back door off. (It couldn't be opened IN flight)
Landings in Wellington were always "Interesting" ... And thanking the pilot was obligatory .. and heartfelt. (it made their day)
The Waiouru 'strip saw interesting viewing of all manner of aircraft when a crosswind was blowing.
