Bike using oil

I had my bike in the workshop recently and they had to drain the oil. They reckon it only had about 1 litre in it, it takes 1.7 litres if you are not changing the fliter.
Its approximately 5000kms since I last changed it and added 1.9 litres as I put a new filter on.
Its not leaking any oil and there is no sign of smoke of any kind.
So what to do?

Keep an eye on the oil level, if it uses a bit don't worry

It may pay to check that it has the correct grade of oil (as per the manufactures recommendation)

so your bike is using between 140 and 180 ml of oil per 1000km ( you don't say if the shop changed the filter). That doesn't sound like excessive use to me.

You don't say what your buke is, but I assume it is a small displacement single if it only takes 1.9 Litres at an oil and filter change.

If you run a single cyclinder engine reasonably high in the rev range it will more than likely use a bit of oil. The answer is to check your oil level and top it up regularly between oil changes.

My 650cm single uses about 1 Litre/ 4000km depending on the amount of high revs used, and it has done so since new.

So ... you NEVER check your oil level.

You must be embarrassed that the workshop had to be the one to point it out to you ...

If its air cooled ,they have bigger tolerances than water cooled , that would be more or less normal

Hardly... he hasn't mentioned what bike it is. I could potentially use more than 1L of oil in less than 1000km.

Best to know your bike. I barely know where the CB900 sight glass is, as I never check, and it hasn't used oil in 114k. On the other hand, the BMW is checked before any ride, and during multi-day rides, at least once a day. Oil consumption for it varies according to riding.

Bike is a 650 twin. It sounds like its not a major problem so i'll just keep a closer eye on it from now on. Thanks.

Then there is the whole mineral/synthetic oil issue....

Bike needs running in on mineral....synthetic only after it has clocked up "enough Km's"....then never back to mineral after that.
(getting it wrong affects oil consumption)

If you checked it ... you would have noticed the level down from the full mark surely. "About" .7 of a litre missing is easy to notice on a bike that only takes 1.7 litres. If the level is down .. you usually add oil.

Why didn't you ask the guys in the workshop that you got to do the work about it .... or do you trust us more .. ???

You did admit there was oil "missing" when it was in the workshop ... Are you saying you DID know the level was low before it went into the workshop .... ??

You should try an air cooled 4 cylinder.
I keep a litre of top-up oil under my seat for long rides. I'm topping up the oil every two weeks!

Either A too little because you diddn't allow enough extra to fill the oil filter.
Or B Too much -Ive encountered this a few times where the airbox ends up full of oil.

Or alternately ... 1.7 litres sitting at the bottom of a 20 litre oil catching dish may not look much different to "about" one litre.
