a dash of water does really bring out the flavours in a good whisky, ice providing you don't suck on it or let it melt too much does the same. But like you said he mos well use what is plentiful.Cask strength or barrel proof whiskies (usually those over 50% abv) can usually benefit from the addition of a splash of cool water or an ice cube or two. By adding a splash of water, flavors and aromas that might be missed in such a high proof whiskey begin to emerge

I use 60% ABV neutral spirit, or even up to 80%ABV if it's a potent herb. I then grind up the herbs, and put it into a bottle and fill with spirit until there's just enough spirit to cover all the herbs. Then leave for a month, shaking the bottle twice the week. Filter off the herbs, and you're done!
It's managed to kick a few asses before, mine included.
