What, with the crime rate dropping and more people being in work?

What are the words to Kumbaya again? I seem to have forgotton, and we really shouldn't miss a chance to hold hands and sing it...

A proportion of 3 strikes incarcerations will be a waste of tax payers money. The world, his friends and past life are dragging him down.

Sending ex prisoners back to their old lives and ways is just plain stupid and encourages re-offending all the time

His life is shit, but the state spends all this money on incarceration, and none on improving his situation, thence improving our situation

its all ass about face economics, but thats not the real question!

The failing of rehabilitation actions in general, that being returning to the old ways, applies exactly the same regarding 3 strikes, and costs the tax payer in the end for them just to return to their old friends and life

Great rationale from the status quo brigade there. Do you have stats on the crime rate dropping broken down by which crimes are dropping? Could just be that they're catching less people speeding or indeed have removed that from the crime list.

If it worked then I'd go find them for ya. Just sit still and be a good boy and you'll be fine.

And he's Maori, surprise surprise. This arsewipe is one of those dropkicks that stand over kids and people on their way back from town in alleyways with their bros. Put him down like a vicious dog.

    Homicides down 18.1%
    Assaults rate down 3.4%
    Sexual assaults up 1.3%
    Robberies down 10.1%
    Burglaries down 11.1%
    Theft down 11.8%

The Sexual assaults number is reasonably likely to be due to an increase in reporting, rather than actual number of offences...

Source: http://www.kiwiblog.co.nz/2013/04/2012_crime_stats.html (Yeah I know you'll not like the other KB as a source, but it indirectly the Police stats.)

Thing is for Taranaki, the reported crime levels have dropped, but the stats for catching crims are down. seems that in Taranaki you're more likely not to get caught....I wonder if people have stopped reporting thefts and burglaries because, what's the point the police can't catch them. If they do they get to stay on homie detention just round the corner from the people they robbed.

Yes this is the case, nearly everybody I know has been burgled or had their car broken into it and not reported it. If it snot worth making an insurance claim whats the point. THe only reason they do report it when making a claim is to get a file number from the police so the claim goes through. About the only reason to bother.

They're hardly likely to increase police funding if there's no apparent reason.

Interesting read. What would you spin as the reason for the drop in the overall figures?

If any other govt statistical practice is used as an example then it probably means that the criteria for recording them has been changed.

meh... if it's down by 1% it's down by 1%, nothing changes. If it's up by 1% it's up by 1%, we get new and improved laws.

So you're saying that 1% is not statistically significant?

Not at all. Especially when some of those crimes in MisterD's link were up in the 50k+ region. Take the % off of the numbers if it makes you feel more comfortable.

I'm perfectly comfortable thanks. I'm just not sure whether you are arguing with me or agreeing with me.
