Is it a 4 Valve (Capri) or 2 Valve (Targa)?

I've been resurrecting an 82 500 Monza and getting parts of German Ebay, they don't rob you for the post like the Yanks.

There is a thread on Wild Guzzi about a Lario 650 that you might find interesting.

My main concern when I get it running is replacing the valves as they are known to stretch and may be made of two parts.

Not sure if this is an issue on the 4 valve heads.

Ummmm... never heard of issues with 2v engines, the 500 is bullet proof, proberly the best they did... the 4v heads are grenades, 2 piece valves drop onto the piston... they reconmend GN250 valves, most have been sorted by now tho.

The valves are an issue but its not helped by the valve springs being very stiff (as in way too stiff) in an effort to slam them home quickly and allow higher rev's.

FWIW - while the 500 is a good engine the 2V 650 small block is definately the one to go for. Unless you like a challenge and then you tackle the 4V issues which many have done. The yanks and some europeans were making 750 and 810cc 4V motors that fair fly!!!!

I'd bet a sack full of sweat jock straps that the 400 4V is very similar to the Lario and could be enlargened fairly simply.

ahhh ok ta, I just hadent heard of the 2v engines having issues, is that with them all?
And again... I have never seen a 2v 650, I asumed they were all 4v'd the 650's the 2 valved engines jumping from the 500 to the 750?

No - the 2 valvers are fine - just the 4v sporty jobs had silly valve springs.

There was a V65SP which was a pretty good thing by all accounts and then the 750's like the Nevadas and so on.

To be on the safe side I think 30 year old engine with 80k the valves should be replaced for peace of mind.
Are the current V7 range 2 or 4 valve?

I believe as of this year (bikes not here yet) they are now 4v heads

EDIT the V7 models receive a redesigned motor with increased compression, as well as refined fuel injection and engine management systems. These motors are not just mildly modified from last year’s unit, they feature more than 200 new or redesigned parts … roughly 70% of the engine components.

The result of these changes is a claimed, and welcomed, 12% increase in horsepower (now 51 hp) and 10% increase in torque (43 foot/pounds)

Are the heads still the Heron design with the chamber in the piston? I goggled it the other day and it dates from WW1 aircraft design
Interesting how Guzzi have used a design from the late 70's, I've replaced the 32 mm forks with 35mm ones and just got some V65 Konis for it, coupled up with the rebuilt triple brembos and a set of Bridgstones looking forward to some twisty road action.

mark and rolly from scooterazzi deal with my V40 here in wellington and afew comments have slipped of boaring it out to be a 650. just a nice little boost for the open road, since it sucks ass as soon as it reaches 100kph. reeving at 5000 on 5th gear.
could this be a good idea?

Since its a shaft drive you would need to swap out the rear end for something with a higher ratio which would be expensive.
