Rotors question

Hi guys,


Looking at changing the rotors on my MC22 just for piece of mind. (not sure of the history of the brakes and things). Just wondering if anyone has used these on their bikes?

Can get Metalgear rotors which are aparently good quality but wondering if the above would be allgood?

you only replace rotors if they are worn below minimum thickness (stamped on the disc somewhere) or they are warped.

Don't replace them just because there's better things to spend money on. If you don't have access to some vernier calipers to measure their thickness then drop by your nearest bike store, I doubt they'd even charge you to check them.

prob what he did..then tossed another $100 on them for TM..

depends what the original form of the stainless was as some is rolled out before making discs and heat etc can make it want to go back to it's original form, unlikely with an american known product with their suing laws etc

mostly all sheet metal starts off as a solid bar... peeled off with a knive when red hot..rolled to thickness...
the heat is the normaliseing process that induces a new memory into it...

One of the main idea of the wave design is to stop warping as the rotor heats up...
As theres more metal in the outside cirecumference than the inside it's able to expand
more... the spaces "wave' on the out side gives it somewhere to expand into so
removeing the need for it to warp..

I have heard that Metal gear rotors are made from plate. Because plate or sheet steel is made in rolls, when you heat it up it tries to warp back to it's natural state when it was rolled.

I dunno how bike rotors are normally made, but I do know a popular bike shop in Wellington will no longer deal in Metal gear because of the continual ongoing issues.

If you're not having trouble, you might have some good ones. Or what I was told was not the full story.

I've been warned off them by a mechanic, and the parts department guy who sourced them. So if you do start having trouble, replace them with something else would be my suggestion.

Yeah at the time I was tossing up between Metal Gear or getting some Galfer or EBC from the UK.

On the plus side I bought direct from Metal gear and they were excelent to deal with, good feed back and prompt shipping. I will just keep an eye on them as I said so far so good.

Metal Gear would not sell to me direct .... they sent me through bits4bikes ( or tried to )

I think that comes down to being contractually bound, as a wholesaler to some shops/distributors. I have mostly only encountered it with getting bike bits, but I can't think of a parts distributor/importer/agent that sells to the public also.

There prolly are some, but I've always had to use a shop to order and pay. And I know quite a few guys in various wholesalers.

Yeah there was that .... I have had this "discussion" on a thread I started ages ago.... In short I "could" have had them sent to my Father n Law & got him to bring them over when he turned up ...
