Hello Kiwi Bikers,

Since I'm going to be the owner of a new Honda CB500F in the near future i thought i should post and invite you all to share your thoughts on talking business.

So, with regards to buying a brand new bike from a retailer, what are your experiences with bartering down the retailed price ($10995).
I've heard some retailers don't negotiate on brand new bikes, but some will. Should i ask for gear discounts as well etc.

Before going in blind i just wanted to ask what has worked for you in the past? Wheres the fuzzy line where its win/win for both you and the seller?

I will be paying cash, no finance

Just a heads up...the old "discount for cash" thing hasn't genuinely worked for quite some time.
It is preferred that you pay with finance especially if the Dealer is on full recourse as the generally means that they will/could make more money from it.

You may be surprised as to how much a Dealer makes from a new bike sale. Rule of thumb is to ask for the on road costs or possibly if the unit is an old stock item you may get slightly luckier.

Yes, i have heard that too! I've also heard that it helps with "cash flow," but I'm not sure that holds much water from what I've read.
The main reason I'm paying cash though is because i have that luxury to do so and it's cheaper for me in the long run.

Thanks for the advice, i will definitely ask if they can throw in the on road costs. They can only say no.
Since the bike is a 2013 i doubt its considered "old stock"

When I bought the CB1300 from Warkworth Honda, they filled the tank/supplied and fitted a Ventura pack rack/paid for ORC's all for the brand new on floor price..
I think Holeshot gave me a key ring when I bought my third bike from them..

I paid Colemans $17K cash for my current bike...not a bean.

Hmmm, yeah, possibly due to the simple fact such as that. More desperate for business perhaps?

Oh hell no, not in this case, Warkworth Honda do massive sales with the farming community, they just happen to have a brand new 1300 on the floor one day when I walked in there.
They don't usually have road bikes, in fact I think they have none at present.

I managed to get the same deal on an FZ8 as I did with the Honda, through the now defunct North Harbour Yamaha.

Bought 5 new bikes and the best deal you can get is to ask for some good discounted gear and parts.

Last bike I got the ecu removed and sent away to America to be altered and returned installed prior to purchase. The reflash I paid for but the labour I didn't. The bike also had no money at that stage. I got Yoshi exausts installed at cost price and first service free. Plus when I go back to the store everything I buy is at a reduced price even if only small amounts on some gear. Eg helmet at a cheaper price than I could have sourced same helmet overseas.

Sure try for a discount but forming a good relationship with the shop and a savings via discounted goods serves both parties well.
