    Hot CPU?

Computer seems to randomly shut down. Is the CPU getting too hot?

Speedfan says it's around 55-60 degrees.

    Cheers,

One of my laptops is an HP DV6000, one of a range of "Pavilion Entertainment PCs". Apparently these are renowned for random lockups/crashes/shutdowns. There was a recall and also a class-action lawsuit relating to this. The fault is the Nvidia graphics chip overheating. Not one of these, is it?
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.

    Cheers lads,

She's a desktop. I think the CPU and Motherboard are around 7 years old now.

So I might try some new thermal paste and make sure the fan is on nice and tight.

I dare say I'll replace the Motherboard and by the end of the year.

Then you could get it fixed under ther consumer act thingy..a pc should not clap out in 2 years
It should last a lot longer than that mate..warranty doesnt matter.it should last a reasonable time.

Well the PSU is 2-3 years old, it's a home built job.

Pavilions are notorious for having cheap componentry and inadequate cooling. Components get hot, fail sooner etc. Best thing you can do for those is getting a cooling pad.

Completely depends on the quality of the PSU.

First guess is PSU, and it's an easy replace. I presume you have checked for dust build up? Even cleaning out the dust can yield large gains.

Can't see much dust on the PSU, but cleaned all the fans and air filters out etc.

Check the capacitors for leakage; there's been massive faults with alot of caps due to possible industrial espionage & poorly formulated electrolyte. I'll let wiki explain it in detail

CPU temperature cutoffs are normally around the 80 degree C mark. My money would also be on the PSU, failing that a dodgy motherboard.

That depends on the CPU. Intel chips are designed to run much hotter than AMD.
