Yes, XBOX RROD, PS3 YLOD, and the odd other chip will respond to reflowing the BGA, done it myself.

None of which are Intel CPUs, he's just making stuff up.

Intel CPU's are good up to about 90 deg. Then they usually shut down. I used to run a silent P4 at about 70-85 all the time. So long as you top up the thermal paste every few years ran fine.

Do the thermal paste and you will get another 3 years out of it. But watch out if you're using silver. If there are trace amounts over the pins when you reset it - you're stuffed.

As for the Intel desoldering issue. It did happen, but it was so minor that something like 50 units in the world had it happen. It was intel's first experience with performance gpu's. They fixed it almost immediately. Unlike AMD who seem to think that it is acceptable for CPU's to self destruct at 80 deg - and had the solution of underpowering chips that exceeded that temp.

Depends on the CPU generation. I remember our Pentium Ds constantly hitting 75 ish just putting it under some load... who would have thought, 2x P4 = lots of heat

The newer ones are less tolerant of heat, and simply don't operate in the same temperature range as the P4, PD etc.

Ah the Prescott, or Preshot as she was affectionately known.

Haven't seen that video of the Athlon XP lunching itself after the HSF was removed in years. P4... no worries... they just throttle back and keep on trucking till you put it back on A friend has a P4C 3ghz in a laptop. WTF were they thinking

Still not sure at this stage. Been busy with other things at the moment. I'm gonna replace the motherboard and CPU regardless, they've had their time. I'll do that and then see what's going on.

    What he said^^^
If my computer was actually needed for anything other than storing movies on I'd have binned windows ages ago (I have an E8400 was good when I got it, not so much now)

i dont understand the question. Ext is a much better fs. Vlc wins all over the place. And mkv is preferable.
If you have friends who run windows (who would... Eww.) them make them get linux reader to pirate your pirated shit.

Nah it's more like it works and I'm lazy so it's still got widows from when I was running a media server and everyone had windows so I just set mine up the same, then when I pulled apart the server I just put the hard drives in my pc, it's not even overclocked, no need.

It's only good if you can find software that you need which works on Linux. The majority of software I need doesn't work on anything but Windows, and Wine fails to do the job more often than not.

Linux fan boys are like Mac fan boys without the cool clothes.

I like Linux and all - but I will never walk around telling people that it is the most awesome thing on 4 cores. Android at least has a prerequisite for hardware.

As soon as Ubuntu actually get people buying phones then I will start seeing a way forward. I think it is unlikely that Android will get people buying Chromebooks
