What size runs are you talking about?

Perhaps you could get some card stock printed at a low volume printer and then hand cut and glue the blanks into boxes?

Maybe laminate glossy photog paper onto something...

All much more labour intensive.

I have found a company in Hamilton that does boxing for cakes mainly, but has a very limited range for chocolates.

So far they have not responded to my email. However I have about 20 answers from companies from China.
One company in France is happy with smaller runs, and a company in the States does bags with hard bottoms fully biodegradable, and is happy to send to NZ for a reasonable prize.


My print range is in the 500 each size for now, and once more established larger runs. At that stage I can also eliminate the sizes that don't do too well. I am well aware that the costs will be larger for the first run / smaller units, however I really thought that I could find someone in NZ to pick up the business.

Well here is hoping that the company in Hamilton will send me at least an email acknowledging that they received my email.

It pleases me too...and surprises. I worked in the packaging industry in the 70's and at that time there were at least four outfits in ChCh alone which could have done what you wanted.

like a lot of other manufacturing, that bit's munted too....I suppose it's just downstream economics - not a lot being made here now so less packaging companies around.

little update.

reply back from one company, a single sheet with pricing and a link to boxes online. grumpy I think...not much help.
Maybe one or two boxes that I could use for seasonal packaging.
Will see if they are happy to send a sample or two.

reply back from the other company, someone will get in touch with me....salesperson for AKL not in for the day.

Its quite sad, there are a lot of smaller businesses that do confectionery/chocolates etc and they all have a need for boxes and speciality packaging (xmas/easter etc...especially for moulded chocolates). Or else it is to buy of someone who imports some packaging and resell if for an exorbitant price that will be oncharged to the customers, usually with a mark up.

The french guy that I worked for was nearly in tears when his order came from china and the boxes were faulty (t'was very funny as I was the only one being able to understand his flow of rather colourful french. I had to translate to his wife and his kitchen staff).
He tried to find a supplier in NZ but gave up after a while, and the shop staff was tasked with not only folding the boxes but gluing them in place so that they not open spontaneously. Granted that was a couple of years ago.

Its sad, i much rather pay good money here, than send what budget I have for packaging to china.

Nothing wrong with a single sheet of prices. Salesman out for day... they're on the road travelling and selling.

Many businesses are good at what they do, but the rest of the stuff escapes them, and don't have much need for advanced websites etc.

I agree, I am happy to have recieved the prices and can now spend some time getting the images online together with the prices.

However, when sending a follow up email in regards to specifics and all that comes is a link to the page it is a bit sad. Especially when in my first email i have referred to their webpage.

I used to be in telesales/direct sales and b2b....so I kind of know what goes into selling a product. (well at least just a little )

no way dude. Free trade. And chinas economoney needs all the help it can get. Which is good, because our manufacturing sector doesnt need money anyway.
