You are less likely to be deported if you are a bad boy on a citizenship.
On a residence you can still be deported.

Basically right - you can't be deported if you're a citizen [s3(1) Immigration Act 1987]. If you're a citizen the immigration act 'doesn't' apply (Apart from the customsy type stuff when you come in to or go out from NZ) and you have the right to be in NZ at any time.
