In fact, it's kind of been my point all along.

Measles is no longer a disease that warrants the level of hysteria that it currently commands.
There's quite a few families in Samoa who might disagree with you.

More than 140 000 people died from measles in 2018 – mostly children under the age of 5 years, despite the availability of a safe and effective vaccine. https://www.who.int/en/news-room/fac...detail/measles

Unless you mean the level of hysteria generated by the anti-vaxxers.
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.

The current outbreak in Samoa has resulted in an unusually high number of deaths.

Hence my question two pages ago in post #4861.

    Not at all.

It's a problem of risk. And more specifically the decline in rate of return in a logarithmic fashion vs risk.

Suppose a new ICU is designed that is 90% effective - lets give an investiment cost (R&D) of $10,000.

to get from 90% to 95% will cost another $10,000 - is 95% good enough?

    No.

So to get from 95% to 99% will cost another $50,000 - is 99% good enough?

    No.

to go from 99% to 99.9% will cost another $100,000 - is 99.9% good enough?

And so on and so on.

in IT/Telecommunications - we talk about the five 9s reliability - 99.999% uptime - which means services are down for at most 5 minutes a year.

In Hospital terms - That's 1 in 100,000 deaths due to an equipment issue. Suppose for a moment that you or a loved one are the 1 in 100,000 - what happens next? a Massive lawsuit with fines, payouts, possible legislation etc.

so the next bit of kit comes along with 99.9999% reliability, and perhaps a service life of 10 years - whereby the item will be decomissioned after treating an estimated 1,000,000 patiants - hopefully so that there isn't a 1 in 1,000,000 failure.

I'd like to know when the market protectionism that damages people is going to end and we'll get the truth so that we can make sensible decisions. It's obviously too expensive to screen people pre-vaccine, so eggs will be broken. Denying such is just plain old fashioned stupid.

Except the wailing and gnashing of teeth isn't just restricted to places that have "very little advanced medical care".

The level of public outcry here when there was the recent outbreak in South Auckland (where there were no deaths directly attributable to the disease) was really no different.

And here we have an example of the Dunning Kruger effect in full flight. Only Katman can see the truth, his intellect is superior to 'the masses'. The "sheep" as he puts it.
Except it's not, he's wrong. Again.

And his parents probably ensured he was appropriately vaccinated?

You seem to forget that back in our day the vaccination schedule was probably only half a dozen shots (if that) - spread over a number of years.

These days children's developing immune systems are bombarded with nearly ten times that number.

You are right. I can't remember any of the shots that I got as a baby.

I do remember a few of the many I've had since though, having lived in tropical climes for years, jabs go with the territory. These days I'm a tad gun shy but if there was a theat...

Do you at least accept that the vaccination schedule has grown many-fold over the last 60 years?

And there seems to be a push to include even more.

Not having a little kid I've no idea. If a disease can be prevented though, why would a responsible parent not take the opportunity?

I have to go. I'm cooking Dave's potato bake recipe. And the vinho tinto is great

Why don't you do yourself a favour and look up the current US childhood vaccine schedule* - instead of making yourself look so pathetically uninformed.

*I use the US as a measuring stick simply because you can bet your arse that we will be pushed to head down that same path.

There may be just a little bit of truth in that. There is of course the tragedy the Sackler family and others inflicted on America. it's possible though that they ain't seen nothing yet as Trump is making the food industry self regulating. That's all good though, nobody would ever risk putting profits ahead of the health of the public. Oh, and there's this big house on Pennsylvania Avenuie that I'd like to sell you.

On the other hand I don't go to the doctor to tell him how to do his job. I take his advice until I have reason to question it, then we discuss it, and he does listen.
I'm definitely not going to believe every discredited crackpot and fuckwit who has an imaginary axe to grind.

I'm sure your standard Mills & Boon is much more palatable.
