I'd expect a C.V drop to the store manager for that kind of job.

I've never got a job like that, though. And don't really know anybody who has?
Current job was meant to be me helping out for a few days, been around two months so far. No CV involved or any mentions of any qualifications.
There seems to be a problem with somebody like me finding constant work at a job like DSE or a supermarket

Tried this once - actually got a job. So there's one success case I guess.
But yeah, its very much being confident, going to the right person and making a case for why you should get a job. I'm not sure of too many people who can genuinely state they want to being on the checkout though

It is possible in this case that its standard practice to turn away jobseekers. I know where I work we are instructed to direct them to our website, and even the Manager will do the same as all hiring must go through head office.

However for anything more serious than retail then the OPs advice is perfect.
