I think Erik's post is spot on. You cannot tell if the innards of the helmet are OK. Unless it is a tiny drop from almost on the floor, replace it. If you hit the deck, then replace it, even if you don't think you headed the floor.
A helmet can be replaced. Your brain can't.
On testing without crashing, factors you cover are:
Misting
Noise
Comfort - when first wearing and after a while
