You can make your own very cheap dog food.
When I owned dogs I bought a cheap pigs head and boiled it in a 14 litre pot until the meat and everything fell off the bone.
Any cheap meat will do - I've used wild goat, old ewes ... liver, hearts .. if you use just meat rather than meat still on the bone it cooks much quicker .. If you use a head keep the brains, eyes - everything - the dog will love it ..
I let it cool and then broke it up into small chunks. Then I added soup mix and pasta and boiled till it was all cooked. Let it cool a little and add a packet of gelatine. Pour it into two litre ice cream containers (You'll get seven from 14 litres) and put in the fridge. It will all go solid and the dogs love it.
You can vary the meat and other stuff to water ratio to suit the dog - once the gelatine is in the water goes solid and the dog gets full - even though it's only eating mostly gelatine and water ...
If you don't like the smell of it cooking, add garlic - dogs love it ..
I fed two dogs for less than $10 a week with this mix ...

Labs are smart too. As discussed they love their tucker. I think that helps training because they think 'how do I get rewards/food' first.
The Doogle is only half lab and he's really easily trained - he's got a lab appetite.
I really hope you know what you are doing. Have you seen the number of labradors around whose owners have gone blind?
Keep on chooglin'
My Sam is smarter than Doogle, sort of. I look at him and mention the walk word and he goes beserk. Tears around and out to the hall where he carries my shoes in, one at a time. Some times I get one shoe and one boot.
Our new dog, the Belle, Lab has settled in well. She clings to me. No jealousy between the two.
I'm wondering if she isnt going blind. Her eyes are quite cloudy without a distinct iris, or maybe it is just a change due to age. She dosen't always follow movement with her eyes.
BB, I'll try your recipe. Would the head of the drongo down the street suffice? No, hold on, too salty and no brains, would be like boilling an empty tin.![]()

I get the shoe bit too - when he decides it's time to go. I think they have an accurate turd clock.
My fucken Lab learnt to open the fridge !!! How do you keep weight of a Lab that can get it's own food from the fridge ???
(I used a stretchy, from the cooler tubes on the back to the door, to keep it closed - even then I'd hear the occassional 'clunk' as the dog tried to open the fridge ... and the stretchy pulled it shut again ...)
