    Repainting Intruder?

    Hello,

I have a Suzuki Intruder that im planning on repainting myself, and I wanted a couple of opinions.
I have already done a few small panels, and I have started prepping the tank.

Ripped it off, emptied it, and have started sanding it back to metal (not fun)

It has some shit inside it, I take it kero and ball bearings can clean this up?

The finished tank will be primered, then sprayed with satin black with some areas in gloss black.
Is it best to cover the entire tank in satin, then do the bits in gloss, or the other way around?

Also say when you painted the tank in the first colour, and you wish to mark out the lines you want to paint in the other colour, what tape is best to use? I imagine normal masking tape would possibly allow for some paint bleed.

Doing this all with rattle cans, so wont be a pro finish, but I dont want it looking like ass either.

Another thing, if one was to modify the tank, such as adding extra metal on top of it to change the shape and add a gauge, any suggestions on how practical this is?

For a minute there, I thought you were referring to using a paintball gun on a home invader...

No, but that would be effective!

What do you call that blue tape people use to mark different areas off, is it simply painters tape?

Straight painters tape bro, leaves a bit of a edge but just sand it down.
In future use paint stripper on the tank. Takes 20 mins tops to get it back to bare metal. Use a power wire brush to get all the little specks off.
Etch prime. Surface prime then top coat. Looks pretty chur for minimal effort.

There's no need to rub it right back to the metal, back to the undercoat will do.

Go to your local Miter 10 and look at the different tapes, they have grades an what their good for printed on them.

Building up the tank,,"New Tech" Bog will work fine but don't use that pink general body filler crap.

The area you work on for that will of course have to go back to bare metal.

With a rattle can job it's best to go to a paint shop that can mix the colour and put it into the can for you.

They will also provide the best spray tips for your application when you tell em' what your doing,,,and they alone can make a huge difference to your end result.

Agree with the above re sanding back.

Also re paint shop for 'proper' paint in a can - there is a shop down here that will put auto paint of your colour in a can. You can get a very good finish.

Re tape - same shop as above will supply proper masking take - you can get a fine vinyl type of tape that is easy to curve and leaves a nice clean edge - the 'paper' tapes will bleed and leave a shit looking edge - they are ideal for masking large areas between the more expensive vinyl tape.

Practise on a scrap tank, door or piece of primed MDF.

Suzukis of that era rust the inside os the tank. It will need to have any repairs done on it & then a proper sealing process (POR did a good one). Else you will just end up where you were in near future with more crap in carbs despite any filter you wish to put in the way. Been covered on many sites.

Spray Store also stock POR15 tank treatment.

You can get a quality finish from rattle cans. Just give it a month or so to evaporate the solvents out of the paint before you use the tank, it's still quite soft until that happens.

Thanks for the tips guys. Im torn between half assing and doing a nice job, and seem to be tending to aim for the latter.

Ended up using some paint stripper, that sht is nasty. Destroyed about 8 gloves, but it got the job done.
Wanted to go bare metal cause of the damage, and ive never done it before.
Im going to use normal rattlecan paint and primer this time around, and see what results I get. If I do it again ill defo look into "car paint in a can"
AllanB: Will look into that tape.

Cheers for the advice all, Ill get pix on here soon enough.
