A while back, 10BikeKid & Dino both quoted almost unbelievable top speeds out of XR250's. I have recent experience that backs up their claims.
Last winter on a quick ride to Taihape, I was most impressed to see 140k's on a downhill stretch. By far the best speed I had ever seen ( usually around the 120 mark in normal conditions). Then, not long ago on a long straight, with obviously ideal conditions I got it "off the clock" to 150!!!
This bike is a very stock ( except for a straight thru muffler ) & very worn original 1980 XR250A.
Wouldn't have believed it unless I saw it with my own eyes.

'79 XR250,Used to get 130kph indicated occasionally, got that on a '76(?) XL250 yellow and black too!
Prety sure a GPS would prove how crap the speedo's were tho......

Nice, And you thought we were full of it , pretty sure the one I rode was running much higher gearing and I may have been slipstreaming behind my own XR500 that was two up at the time
