Thread: Refreshing RD350LC

    Refreshing RD350LC

    Hi people I have a Yamaha RD350LC engine I've been trying to sell which doesn't seem to be worth much to anyone, so my next thought is pull the bitch apart and check out internals etc to see if its worth rebuilding..

    Now I don't want to put a whole lot of money into it as its in a sad state in seems. It's attached to an offroad kart, when I got it she ran all right, pulled fucken hard and sounded like a chainsaw on crack. After a while it started to run only on one cylinder, I replaced plugs and adjusted air/fuel screw, went to go for a burn and it died under load. Starts and idles fine, albeit only on one cylinder, but when you put your foot down it coughs and splutters and all that good shit. Before I changed plugs and air/fuel screw it ran fine on one cylinder. Changed plgs and screw back and still has this problem..

    So I decided when it doesn't sell I'll pull it apart, check out pistons and rings etc, possibly replace those, rebuild both carbs and it should be good to go? If this is the case I should be able to have it done for <$200? One thing of concern to me is water in gbox, which apparently is water pump bearing?

    So anyway my question here is if I replaced pistons/rings, rebuilt carby with rebuild kit and changed that bearing am I likely to get a good running motor out of it? After all its an old two stroke, what else could go wrong with it?

    What are some other things to look out for?

    What's the likely cause on the stall under load issue? I'm no mechanic my thoughts are carb needs tune/adjusting as its flooding engine? There's a large build up of gas in exhaust when I remove it after running, on the side that's not igniting. There is spark both cylinders so I'm thinking fuel. But then its old and probably not maintained, so could it also be compression gone on that side? Have no compression tester to check

    Anything else that might be the problem? I'm not going to give this engine away and seem to be having a hard time finding a decent replacement for less than the cost of a whole motorcycle

    El cheapo fix would be good, but there's no point doing that if the internals are poked as well, hence the idea of a top end strip down..

    Is this the engine you were trying to sell for a grand?
    Just putting pistons and rings in may not fix it, depends on how worn it is , no point in being half arsed with repairing it.
    if one cylinder isn't running its probably because the pilot jet in the carb is blocked
    you don't need a compression tester to see if there is compression , just bump it over on the kick start and see if both compressions feel the same.
    You will need to replace the waterpump seal , maybe have a look at the gear clusters to see if the water has rooted them.
    Apart from that should be sweet.

    What year engine is it? Are the parts readily available? I might be interested to buy, but again, at a reasonable price.

    Yep the very same one Yow Ling. Was never actually trying to sell for a grand, just pricing it out of reality as I hoped a swap would come along. Guess people don't horde old bikes n engines like I thought they would

    Anyway I really like the engine just thought it might be less of a headache replacing it. Not too confident the internals will be good, and like you said water could've poked the gears. Seems pretty well not maintained aside from draining fuel when not in use and the odd carb clean, going by what previous owner told me..

    What's this going in? It's not a bike yeah? And ideally you want to spend no more than a grand on a replacement engine?

    If you're not going to give it the love it requires, sell it to Yow Ling... he's a serious buyer, and will spend what it needs to be done right. It's economical enough for him as he either has the spares or knows people that can he can do dirty deals with... which always makes a difference.

    It's either that or keep sitting on it. Which would be a shame, there's not that many of them left.

    Its on a sidewinder. Ideally I want to spend no more than say $600 on a replacement. Engines seem few and far between for a runner with carbs through to exhaust at that price. I'm just looking for the most economical way to get this beast up and running again. I would like to see it go to an enthusiast, but not if that means I sell it for 200 and have to fork over another 800 to replace it. I need to see inside it but i'm confident I could fix it to a good running state for much less than $800
