..........not to say rogue elements of Assad's army didn't use gas, but the "rebels" have used it in the past and Al Quaida supporters have been caught with Sarin at least twice this year........

I don't think they'll use manned strikes - probably Tomahawk cruise missiles and Drones......the Syrian's have the latest Russian AAM defense systems.....and the US would like the least exposure to losing more men....
Agreed. It is possible the gas (assuming it wasn't just dirty smoke) was released by insurgents or, as you say, a Syrian army unit acting on its own initiative. We just don't know yet.

I too doubt the US will risk any lives especially when remote control works reasonably well. If I was the US I'd be telling the French/British/Germans etc to do the job instead. Syria is in a French sphere of influence.

With any war in the middle east ( or anywhere ) there is no such thing as the 'Good Guys' on one side and the ' Baddies' on the other. Either side will lie through their back teeth to score brownie points.

In this case, there are enough fanatics on both sides to use whatever they can get their hands on. If the USA does fire up, it will quickly escalate.
