Auckland Bucket Racers 1

Hi racers

Thank you for your email address, we can now keep you up to date with info about racing at Mt Wellington.

Next meeting is only two weeks away on the 14th and 15th so it's time to get in the garage and check the bike over!

While in the garage have a think about the shark fin for the chain sprocket protection as it will be compulsory for the October meeting 13th -14th , I'm sure some of you will have fitted one with a good idea or two to share with us all.

Transponders ! Tim our timing guru has some good info to sift though on leasing, great idea and much less expensive ...

Hi bucket racers

Here is an update of what was said at the last riders' briefing about buying or leasing transponders from Mylaps.

The bucket club is happy to hire transponders to riders at $20 each per meeting. However, you should be aware that you can save money by leasing or buying a transponder yourself from Mylaps.

If you go to http://www.mylaps.com/en/products, you will find that they are selling or leasing transponders for motocross, karting, road racing, etc. The transponders we use at Mt Wellington are the orange MX transponders. The red road race transponders won't work at Mt Wtgn and we suspect that our orange MX transponders won't work at big tracks like Hampton Downs.

You can buy an MX Classic transponder from Mylaps (AU$350 plus freight). It comes with a 3-year warranty.

Or you can lease an MX Flex transponder from Mylaps for AU$35 plus freight plus a subscription for 1-year (AU$60), 2-years (AU$100) or 5-years (AU$200). It comes with an unlimited warranty. We recommend one of these lease options.

At the end of the lease period, you can re-subscribe via the Mylaps website for another 1, 2 or 5 years (AU$60, AU$100 or AU$200). In addition to the unlimited warranty against failure, the leased transponder will be replaced by Mylaps if it is damaged in a crash or fire. Technically, the transponder remains the property of Mylaps, but we believe that there is nothing to stop you giving or selling it to another rider. It will have some residual value based on how much of the subscription is left, and the fact that the next person will not have to pay freight or the initial AU$35 fee.

Here are some numbers that might help:

If you hire a transponder from the bucket club at $20 a time, and you attend all 8 points rounds at Mt Wgtn in a season, even if you don't attend the 2-hour or any rounds of the North Island bucket series, you will spend NZ$160 on transponder hire.

If you lease an MX Flex transponder for 1 year, you will pay a AU$35 initial fee, AU$60 for the 1-year subscription and AU$44.63 for freight (ouch, but it is delivered in 10-days). This comes to a total of AU$139.63. At the current exchange rate (1.1567 as of Aug 24), this will cost you NZ$161.52. Basically the same as hiring a transponder for 8 rounds. If you attend the 2-Hour or any of the away rounds, you will save money in the first year. But the next year, it will only cost you AU$60 (NZ$69.41) for a 1-year subscription. This is less than half what it will cost you to hire a transponder for 8 rounds.

Note that if you subscribe for 1 year the first time, there is nothing to stop you subscribing for 2 or 5 years when the 1-year subscription expires, if you decide to do that.

The 2-year and 5-year subscriptions are cheaper in the long run, but more expensive up front. A 2-year subscription at AU$100 equates to NZ$57.84 per year. A 5-year subscription at AU$200 equates to NZ$46.27 per year. These figures exclude the initial AU$35 fee and freight.

Hopefully this information is helpful for you. Check out the Mylaps website (http://www.mylaps.com/en/products) for more info. If you still have any questions about buying or leasing a transponder, contact Tim Fraser (mit.resarf@gmail.com).
