Rear caliper - 2nd hand part or rebuild?

Rear caliper (GSF250 Bandit) failed the WOF, I can get a 2nd hand part for around half as much as the parts needed for rebuilding the existing caliper.

The 2nd hand one is in the country, service parts would be coming from US so would be slower.

Also I imagine there would be a bit more labour on a rebuild than just fitting a 2nd hand part? (I don't do much work on the brakes myself I don't think it's worth the risk of doing something wrong)

2nd hand one sounds better on the wallet, but then a rebuilt one should be good as new...

What do you reckon? I can't decide

Can you be sure the second hand one wont be putting you in the same position next wof? I would be rekitting the current one and I am sure there is a Manawatu rider that will help you out just some of riders who could just pm them yod,bogan,supersonic,86gsxr,ducatilover and there be plenty more.

Thanks, that sounds like the best plan. Least likely to fail at the wrong time as well I guess.

The garage will be doing the rebuild as they currently have the bike semi-dismantled so will let them get on with it. But yeah ducatilover has helped me out heaps in the past. But now the bastard had moved to HB

Fail is what, leaking, will not bleed properly perhaps (spongy pedal)
As long as the caliper bore, piston and seal groove are not corroded then new seals would normally fix things.
You have to wonder about the master cylinder.

Most rear calipers are fairly basic, here is one of my TL1000 calipers when it got a going over.

Maybe it is a single piston sliding caliper like this off the DR650,this is the front but the rear is the same concept.
Mechanics is just being methodical and stopping to reevaluate if there is a problem, anyone can do it.

No there is no leaking, I think the issue was the piston being corroded or the seals being shagged or something meaning the piston was not going back into the caliper.

Do you think there might be an issue with the master cylinder too? Mechanic didn't mention that.

Yep I agree anyone can do it (up to a point) but for me although I enjoy it, most times it takes five times as long and ends up just as expensive after I've broken parts, tools and fingers. So on this one the mechanic can do it. I did give it a thorough service pre-WOF so I don't feel too guilty.

If it won't go back, just take it off, pump the piston out, clean the bore with a bit of scotchbrite and reassemble it.
Wet the seals with clean fluid when refitting, you'll be sweet.
