I think if the sentence (no matter what the crime) is one that involves jail time, remand in custody is automatic.

Mrs Turia also said it was unfair that Awatere Huata was refused bail when it was granted to paedophiles.

A very good point from Tariana (cant believe I just said that...) - Cappell was bailed before being sentenced.

However I find it ironic that all this support from Maori politicians has come out of the woodwork. Huata was generally treated with distain due to her choice of political vehicle.
