I got away with riding my extremely loud KTM with obviously aftermarket bits with an L plate, going through a cop stop and after he checked my license. Didn't even bring it up.

Unless they looked close enough at the engine case to read the "649cc" or whatever, no one's gonna bother you.

I imagine it is still registered as a 400. Illegal to sell it as a road legal vehicle at all without a cert though, so doesn't really matter.
Look at the last TM pic, it's registered as a 1992 NX 650 Dominator, which it isn't.

    Cool bike though.

So what should it be registered as?? Im interested and dont know the answer but my wife has a GB400 and I have been thinking of putting a 500 or something bigger in it - But Drew has bought up some points I hadn't thought about.

Strange how reggie sticker shows NXD650 - something must have happened somewhere

Happy for you to share your knowledge on the matter

If you repower an old Morry Minor with a 4AGE Toyota motor you're not going to transfer the plates from the donor car onto the Morry & get away with it. As Drew has eluded, certification is required for such a repower and it appears that this bike has simply had short-cuts taken (oops, I stuck the wrong plate on, officer). In all honesty I doubt it would pose a problem but any prospective buyer should be aware of what exactly they're buying - a potentially illegal vehicle.

Thanks - so if I understand best scenario is to leave as GB400 registered but also display relevant certification.

    cheers

repower fail. Rover V8 or nothing. or 13B Rotang.

You're showing your age, it's Lexus or Nissan Quadcam V8 these days.

Rotaries are for homos and vege farmers.

    its true I am old.

the big issue with Morris minor repowers was the dire brakes, and weird front suspension with torsion arms and odd kingpin type arrangement. Not to mention the four inch wide crossplys and kind of vague steering.

I have got a magazine article somewhere about one done really well with rover V8, some sort of 5 speed manual trans and a cut down ford 8 inch diff. It was basically all new from the firewall forward.

I'll wager $5 and a bag of chips that it was certified as well.

The bike is still a GB400. It should be registered thus.

Whole thing seems less and less legit, with every detail.

I think that picture of the dominator reg, is actually the back end of the dominator, rather than the GB.

    Having had another look.

I think you're right. Underpaying licencing fee then?

I'm all for it. I just think it's rough to encourage a learner to get the thing.
