In our liberal way we sometimes view Islamic extremists as pure religionists driven by their honest belief that the world would be a better place if it was returned to the First Caliphate of the 9th century.

Yes, there are some idealistic young men who live and breathe this aim but many more are simply robbers who want wealth and power. Islamic fundamentalism has become a useful cover for simple brutality.

So far as I can tell these criminals are a minority in Islamic societies but murder is appalling and draws fame and notoriety to them. So they do it cos it works.

The tragic thing about Islam is the violence is mostly against each other. If you look at terrorists events around the world, it is in Islamic countries.
