(quite) A few years ago, I was in a part time business with a friend, making speaker stands. He was the audio nut of the 2 of us, and htese things were HEAVY - filled with sand they ran around 30kg IIRC.
The difference in sound quality was impressive - we set up a set in John Tanner HiFi in their listening room, and even my rather beaten tin ears could pick the difference. The key was the weight. The speakers were spiked or blu-tacked onto the stand, and same to the floor.

So I'm guessing they transfered lower frequency viabration through the floor better with more pressure applied? That is a rather outstanding idea I must say

Kiwi Ingenuity at it's best. Oneday when I can afford full stand type speakers I'll have to try that trick.

You might be able to find some old celestions or KLH or AR stuff for that kind of money. I picked up some old missions for $25. just keep an eye out. Although anything that old probably will need a new foam surround. caps in the cross-overs can dry out in the old stuff too.

I've a set of Diamond 8.4s. Highly recommended. Lurrrvly sound when Iron Maiden's Paranoid is played at a decent level from my A&R turntable with a Linn arm. Mmmmmmm.

You can only really be "with it" when you where your pants at knee height with shiny boxers and you have a polka dot bandana on your head. You also need to end every sentence with the work "man" or "dude"
To every man upon this earth
    Death cometh sooner or late
And how can a man die better
    Than facing fearful odds
For the ashes of his fathers
And the temples of his Gods

Yup. And CD's are inferior to vinyl as (standard) CDs arent capable of reproducing the harmonics of a sound, they're too 'perfect'.

I don't want to lay down more than $200 or so for a pair, so I would be looking at some cheaper older speakers or as WINJA said - soiled ones from Mr Money
I have also had an offer from a mate for some hardly used JBL car speakers - they sound great but I will need to make some spacers (about 1/2" smaller speakers) for my current boxes. Going for about $20 each so I might try that and see how they go before shelling out big time.
Should check out Trade me. Seen some low reserve B&W, Energy, Infinity speakers, in the home audio section.

    Technics are prety good.
