    Metzeler Lasertecs worn out quickly?

I've done around 6000 kms on my front/rear lasertecs that were put on in January. The rear tyre tread is nearly completely gone, the front has about 70% left. I would estimate 85% of my riding is daily commuting and I ride conservatively, I still have 'chicken strips' on the far edge of the tyre... Is it normal for them to have worn through so quickly? The previous stock IRC tyres lasted me 12,000 kms.

are your tyre pressures on the low side?

Scorpio 225, pressures checked every few days and adjusted as required once a week at every fuel up.

normally I would say there are two things that would increase tyre wear generally, one is a heavy throttle hand, but on a scorpio that really shouldnt have a pronounced effect.
the other is incorrect tyre pressures.
how heavy are YOU, and what pressures are you running?

75kgs, 30 psi front, 32 psi rear. I know that front tyres wear out slower than rears, but in this instance the rear's tread has disappeared so much faster than the front which still has lots of life left.

Done a bit of research and seems to be a known phenomenon...

You should not be wearing tyres that fast on a Scorpio unless you are giving it death ...

See if your wheels are aligned

assuming alignment isnt the issue, I would try throwing an extra couple psi in them and seeing how it handles and wears then.
one thing to remember though, is that as a tyre wears down, the rate of wear usually increases.

Your pressures seem low .. as tigtim says - put more in ...

But yes, 6,000ks of mainly conservative city riding on a Scorpio and you should get more wear ...

Try a different tyre ... I would have no idea what to recommend for a smaller bike.

You think that a yank on a 1984 BMW R100RT having a moan two years ago about the same brand of tyre is relevant to you on a Scorpio? Research any tyre on the internet & you'll always find at least one moaning cunt, regardless of the tyre.

Er - yeah its a bit rapid but not far off what I used to get on the Guzzi running them. They are pretty soft..

Maybe a BT45 would be better on the back? (Me33 on front goes with anything)

Have you thought of the possibility that it could be a simple matter of the atmospheric conditions working against, rather than for, the vulcanised circumference of the front and rear end attachments?
I spoke of this very scenario yesterday in a related thread with surprising results.........to be honest.

At least three club members have gotten fewer than 7000 miles from the rear tire (YMMV). The fronts seem to be doing better.

7000 miles? I never got more than 7000km out of a rear on my 250.

6k does sound low though. I remember a few threads where this guy endorsed them for the Scorpio and he seems to have a few clues. Could be worth asking.

I have no reason to believe alignment is the issue as everything 'feels' fine, I'll give it a look however.

30/32 is the recommended pressure in the manual, and what the people at Cycletreads recommended.

No but as seen on other websites it is a known issue, see:

    Sure, why not.

Yeah the Scorpio thread is where the Lasertecs are thoroughly recommended, they've been great - much more grippy than the plasticy stock tyres, but the wear seems much too fast.

3 out of how many? 10? 50? 1000? likely those three had other things affecting tyre wear

my experience has been, (and Im happy to be proven wrong by someone experienced in the tyre industry) that tyre pressures are indicative. They can change depending on your bike, weight, tyre choice, riding style and preferences. for example when I take an R1 to the track, I run lower pressures. I go back onto the road afterwards, and I use higher pressures. fuck the 'recommendations' sometimes just 1-2 PSI can make a substantial difference to handling and feel, and as a result wear. have a go with an extra couple psi.

worth noting is that (and more relevant on race bikes probably) with a lower pressure, the tyre heats up faster, and has the potential to reach a higher temperature which = increased wear. higher pressures will result in slightly lower temps, and less distortion which = lower rates of wear
