    i dont know that the man actually did.
    He was portrayed as a badass with a sense of humor. The kind of shit that makes prime tv. Same as mr asia, biker gangs, surfie gangs, bonie and clyde, generally famous criminals or stereotypes, etc
    as a human, he was a dark motherfucker with no value for life. He didnt gloat about killing people, he just didnt give a fuck. Sociopath, i believe is the term. While the comic is a funny cunt, there was fuckall about the original

    Although if you buy into the hype created from the movie and his books he was really just a relaxed, misunderstood author and painter who happened to kill a few people and liberate appendages of a few others. No harm done eh.

    Mark Brandon was all of that - a psychopathic killer - and a good storyteller and funny man. I was amused last night when they showed a journo asking him if he had anything say - to leave the world any piece of wisdom he had learnt - Read said "Never plead guilty".

    Everyone will have their own opinion of the man ... Like The Reibz I would go a long way to avoid him - even if at times I'm amused by Read.

    He died of liver cancer after refusing a transplant because, in his own words, he "Chopper Read will not stand in line and take a liver from a child who really needs it." That. to me, is the actions of a man with at least something to be admired - a strong sense of doing the right thing in this instance.

    He reminds me a lot of Woody Guthrie's song about Pretty Boy Floyd ... (another pyschopathic killer)

    "Yes, as through this world I've wandered
    I've seen lots of funny men;
    Some will rob you with a six-gun,
    And some with a fountain pen.

    And as through your life you travel,
    Yes, as through your life you roam,
    You won't never see an outlaw
    Drive a family from their home."
    "So if you meet me, have some sympathy, have some courtesy, have some taste ..."

    You have to give grudging admiration to his "no regrets, no excuses" attitude. I did particularly like his explanation for targetting other criminals; he could have played the Robin Hood card, but no: "if I rob you, I get $200 and a second hand Commodore and you go to the cops, if I rob a drug dealer, I get $6000 and he stays quiet. You do the maths."

    He wasn't all bad ay

    When he was still young, Read was already an accomplished street fighter and the leader of the Surrey Road gang. He began his criminal career by robbing drug dealers, based in massage parlours in the Prahran area. He later graduated to kidnapping and torturing members of the criminal underworld, often using a blowtorch or bolt cutters to remove the toes of his victims as an incentive for them to produce enough money so that Read would leave them alive. - Wiki
