Attn audiophiles! WTB: Decent Hi-Fi speakers (auckland)

My handed down reconed etc pioneer hifi speakers have finally got to the point (1978) where they are getting too old and not the quality I want. One of the coils recently seized as well somehow

Re-coning them is not an option so I'm looking for some decent but not toooo expensive second hand Hi-Fi speakers with around 7"-10" whoofers and some decent tweeters (dedicated mids would be nice but are generally with larger speakers, I have my own to wire in anyway). No generic lower model range plastic sony/technics/pioneer/whatever stuff please... I'm looking for the real deal - wooden mid-highish range stuff like celestion, kef, JBL, polk etc etc

At the moment there are a pair of celestion DL8 series 2's on trademe for around $100 which I am quite keen on, but if you have something better or slightly cheaper I want to hear from you!

I am running these through a beauty of a classic - pioneer sx-450 which has enough rms grunt to power any small-mid sized speakers.

Also if you have any powered (active) sub's lying around for sale I'm interested as well.

I bought a pair of celestion's in near mint condition from Cashies for $70 'cos the guy had never heard of the brand and thought they were nasties...

I scored some Wharfdale CR40's (meh) for $350 (new) from the local guys which are ok but a bit boomy on my old technic's amp which really needs and upgrade...

Still... I don't care - I'm old and can't hear for shit anymore.

I'll try to pop out and check out WT in the Hutt but they KNOW their gear.

These are the ones I am looking at. I will go to Mt Eden hifi tomorrow, who are good aquantances of mine and talk to them about speakers. They will be a little to pricey for me with the stuff they have there but I think they can help me choose second hand ones (I'm a poor student ).

If I want boom i'll get a sub... I (usually) listen to black metal which is mainly mids and highs, but I do listen to dance/techno and other types of metal which use all frequencies.

I'm selling my rose wood Wharfedale Diamond 9.5 fronts. About two months old, only just run in, still have boxes.

They don't match my 'Klipsch centre and rear speakers, so the diamonds have to go.

They look good, produce good mids, just lack the highs for my taste.

These early wharfedales could be worth a look , Good size vented cabinet will help with the bass , 92 db for 1 watt makes them very effecinet . These were good on earlier electronic dance music like Yello and go loud for older speakers.
Ran similar series called Mach 9's which are still going well after 19 years

The small dent in the dust cap can be pulled out by gently inserting a pin and pulling the pin out again on an angle.

On the other hand , if you've got lots of money buy these . Had a listen to a pair the other day , sounded great on any type of music. And trust me , you won't need a sub with these babies.

@Teflon: How much would you be looking for them, this sort of thing (someone I can contact easily etc) is what I'm looking for - don't want to get some older speakers with rooted coils from 'Jack Smith' in ruawai or something etc.

@Mooch: I have done the pin trick a few times with various speakers... the dust caps just do as they are named (how boring ) and I suppose keep a tiny bit of air pressure to vent the coils a little more?

Those wharfedale CRS 9's seem to get nice reviews, but I'm concerned with the condition of those ones on trademe - the suspension looks fine but the screws seem rusted and the cone a little faded, could be the light though. Also they seem cheaper though so more what I'm looking for (can't afford a huge amount).

@WINJA: Good idea going to see Paul Money, have heard him before but thaught he was a musical shop owner (eg drum parts, I'm sure I have bought some sticks from a similar named shop). I'll be in Smiths Sound Hifi (not mt eden >_<) who I have known well for a while. Our family (dad spends the hifi money mainly ) gets most of our gear from there except our last tv and the VCR.

I have dedicated mid speaker boxes, but when I get some new speakers in they may not fit/gel as well without a seperate amp to adjust levels perfectly (ohms etc and sound quality/range and output characteristics will conflict as usual).

P.S. good to see the audio nutters come out onto the site. Any of you guys into headphones as well? I got some IXOS dj1002's and my Dad has two senny hd265 monitoring cans - as one of them got a bit munched by a cage :'(

Had Stax electrostatics for a while, doesn't get any better for sound quality, but no so good for comfit, and not portable at all, move them on for lack of use.
A few years ago was in the market for some lighter headphones, Listened to a reasonable number priced in the 100 -250 range. Ended up with some Koss Porta pro Jr's . These are great, comfortable after hours of use .Clean Bass is their strength, excellent on Dance, hard house etc, but also sound good on most material (good dynamics and imaging on classical). Being designed for portable use they are efficient as well so batteries should last longer due to lower volume settings. These compare very well with most closed style more expensive headphones.

That's alot more than I'm looking at paying for speakers untill I am much older (read 10 years older), I think these things are out of my class as well heheh - I'd definately need a better amp anyway.

I don't want to lay down more than $200 or so for a pair, so I would be looking at some cheaper older speakers or as WINJA said - soiled ones from Mr Money
I have also had an offer from a mate for some hardly used JBL car speakers - they sound great but I will need to make some spacers (about 1/2" smaller speakers) for my current boxes. Going for about $20 each so I might try that and see how they go before shelling out big time.

Yeah these are 4 ohms - my amp can do (minimum) 4 ohms on one channel (1 left/1 right) or (minimum) 8 on both channels (two lefts and two rights). Although noone said you can't muck around with piggy wiring and run my 4x four ohmers as 8*2 ;D

Yeah I'm going to go talk to Mr Money next week on tuesday after I sit for my restricted - was way to busy to see anyone today.
