FZR chain needing frequent adjustment

Hey

The chain on my Fzr keeps needing adjustment, seemingly after ever ride over 20kms or so - mostly tightening up.

Can't figure out whats doing it, I'm double checking the nuts etc when I do it, and leaving medium slack - but obviously doing something wrong..

Any ideas on what I should do? Or it is just replace the chain time? - Not sure of its age; I've done about 3000 kms on it though. I try to keep it well oiled too and can't see/feel any kinks

Sounds like it is rooted.

Get the rear wheel off the ground and turn it, look at the teeth and make sure they're not moving in an out indicating an oval sprocket or something else tricky that might be missing with your mind.

If the chain is needing adjusting that often (assuming you are finding the tightest point to check it at each time), then it's on it's way out. Easiest checks are to grab it a few links apart and see if there is any movement in and out, you can measure it along 10 links and see if it's got longer, and you can grab it at the back of the rear sprocket and see if it pulls away from the sprocket.

Start with the Yamaha dealer, I've found genuine parts to be considerably less obscene from Yamaha than for most makes of bike. Failing that from the interwebs, I've bought stuff from www.partzilla.com with no dramas, assuming of course they list the part you want.

Sprocket itself looks ok so I don't think its that at this point, I'll replace the chain when I can just to be sure, I'll assume its generally a good idea to do the sprocket too just to round off all the bases?

First, riddle us this. When you adjust the chain, do you have to leave it a bit slacker than advised and let it come to the right tension when you do up the axle nut?

I ask because if so, you're doing it wrong...and probably not doing the nut up tight enough.

Adjust your chain so that the adjusters are always pulling the chain tight, (with tension on them) so the chain has the right amount of free play. Once that's done, bunch up a rag and place it between the sprocket an chain at the bottom and roll the wheel so it gets jammed in between the two.

Do up the nut. Roll the wheel the other way to get the rag out and presto, chain stays at the right tension.

Seen lots of people try and 'allow' for it getting tight when they do up the axle. I like to laugh for a bit before I give the advice.

Front sprocket esp gets worn. Sometimes a casual inspection they all have teeth & look fine. . . . - Until you take them off & see how cut into they are when you hold them in your hands & realise what you need to be looking for.
