Not until after they stopped making the 998 though. The 2003 model S4R had 10hp less than a 998.
That's a touch under 10% less poke then. I could live with that in the name of a more hooligan-ess power delivery.

195 (not 180 like I thought) down to 130 though? That's more than 25%! That's not tuning it back, that's the thing only running on one fucken slug most of the time!

The exhaust seems a bit over the top to me. If they put on a simple stainless or carbon end can it would make the bike look a little less pretentious.

Well.. The 1198 (It's not the new 1199) as far as I know is a claimed 170hp so more like a 40hp peak loss, Although I'd imagine (hope) the monster would be putting out more than its donor bike in the mid range?
    Whats he building in there??

    Monster 1200 First Rides

MC journo write ups tell me this will be a good seller. Another excellent motorcycle to add to the range of middle weight nakeds; although at 1200 it is not really a middle weight. I will be interested in a test ride and comparison to the 3 - 4 triples on offer.
    Here for the ride.

    Nice looking bike.
    I'd spackle over it.

On the shop floor in Australia this month. Any news on when or if we will see them in NZ anytime soon?

    A very unattractive bike, IMO.

I think the new bike is fantastic.

They have one at Cyclespot Ducati

Ducati released the smaller Monster 821 a week ago which replaces the 696

but its very different to the 696, water cooled, much more powerful and will have restricted versions to fit various license requirements.

apparently it has a 17.5L tank which I like the sound of. Good range when needed.

I'm still happy with the 696 I like the big cans under the seat the air cooled engine and it has just the right amount of grunt for me.

    eek

The 821 is likely to be a real winner even in a competitive middle weight group of nakeds. The 1200 has too much of every thing to make for enjoyable riding. Both great looking and no doubt great sounding bikes. The 821 is on my wish list.
    Here for the ride.

have to wonder what other models they will come out with?

Will they update the 659 which is basically the best/coolest LAMS bike money can buy?

the 1200 does have the single sided swing arm which is pretty sweet and some seem to view it as a requirement/deal breaker.

Motormart in the Hutt have a red monster 1200. I paid Motormart a visit Saturday to view the monster; yes it very nice. It was started up - plenty of noise, must be on the limit, Italians bikes seem to be allowed more sound than others. The sound is inspiring. It will be ready for test rides later this week. Now waiting for the 821 to arrive in NZ and reviews and comparison with the best of the middle weight nakeds.

That 1200 is another machine I'll have to worry about, a couple of minor cosmetic improvements could easily see that parked in my gargre.

It's even a proper size by the look of the spec sheet...

    nice picture,

heck I don't know how you can not like the look of that bike.

here is a really good vid of the 821, pretty good sound as well considering youtube vids never do justice to the sound of bikes.

the tank and back end look really good, I'd be interested to see what sort of wind screen you can get for them, surely there must be an option. The front screen on my 696 actually works really well, much better than i thought it would.

though its missing some fool stuff the old version has its still a nice upgrade with some really nice details added.

Has anyone here in NZ ridden the 1200 Monster? I need to find time to check out a test ride, but always looking for other opinions. And then a comparison with the 821 would be interesting. Having owned a 1050 Speed Triple and loved it - I would like a comparison between both the 821 and 1200 with the Speed Triple. The 1200 is well featured but the 821 may be a more practical bike to live with on the road. Thoughts on the Ducs?
    Here for the ride.

Your kidding right, a touring MV triple. Was it towing a fuel trailer ? They don't have even have enough "chrome to get you home"
