Just an interesting observation, but I noticed that on Windows 7, 8, and Server 2012 in the Certificates (Local Computer) MMC, several of the trusted root CA certificates have an expiration date ranging from 1999-2004. So what's the function of certificates if they expired long before the OS was even released?
