Who wants to go on a ride to the cape?

    Hey there KBers,

Myself and a couple of friends are planning on doing a ride from Hamilton to Cape Reinga from the 22nd to the 25th of November. This is the weekend after the Cape Reinga ride that's being organised on here, so if you couldn't make that one then perhaps you'd like to come along on this one!
We're taking camping gear as we'll be doing the trip on a budget; staying at DOC campsites where possible.

So far there are three of us going, with a varied assortment of bikes; Suzuki GSF250, Kawasaki KLE500, Kawasaki ZX6R. We're all fairly respectable young fellows in our mid - late 20s. We're more interested in seeing the country and having a fun time than racing from stop to stop, so people who are inexperienced or on slower bikes are welcome to join.

Anyone is welcome to come along as long as you don't mind roughing it in tents!
We probably want to keep the number of people under 10 if possible to keep the logistics nice and simple.

SEE BELOW POST FOR ITINERARY, IT WILL BE UPDATED AND MODIFIED ACCORDING TO PEOPLES REQUIREMENTS.

Sooo if anybody is keen to come along, let me know!

Who wants to go on a ride to Cape Reinga?

    Updated (rough) itinerary:

Friday night = camping in Waipu

Saturday = riding to 90 mile beach and heading up to the cape. We had a look at tide times and decided this'd be the best way to do it. If we go straight to 90 mile beach from Waipu (and miss the Russell road ) it'll only take around 3 hours, which works very well with the tides as we'd want to be on the beach at around 3.30. We'll be staying at a DOC campsite near the cape on Saturday night.

Sunday = have a look around the place, set off at some point and hope to make it to Russell (whoever needs to be back home for work could continue on). Camp somewhere around Russell (or maybe george formbys lawn!)

Monday: head for home at a leisurely pace.

I think this will cater well for the people who want to ride 90 mile but need to work on Monday. It'll mean a pretty long day int he saddle on Saturday, but at least the tide times are good!

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    90 Mile beach tide times:
We need to get onto the beach about 3 hours after high tide so it's nice and low when we get to the stream at the top.

I'm really keen that sounds like a real fun ride, always wanted to go right up the top of the island too. Those dates happen to fall on the exact days I'm working but I'll have a think about it and see if I can swap some shifts around!

Pretty sure you're going to come down with a nasty cold on the 22nd and won't be able to make it into work for the next few days

I've got a big BBQ & plenty of lawn in Kawakawa + more or less walking distance to the grog shop. Could be an option for a night.

Thanks for the offer, we'll be passing through there on our way out from Russell so may just take you up on that. Beers and BBQ always go down a treat.

It's reasonably loose and open to changes on the way, but as a rough outline:

Leave from Hamilton Friday afternoon, spend Friday night at the DOC campsite in Waipu (make a fire, have a few beers etc).
Saturday morning set out from Waipu and make our way up to Russell, apparently the series of roads east of the main highway are really nice to ride. Muck about in Russell for awhile and then head off to find a campsite before dark; possibly take george formby up on his kind offer of lawn + BBQ. The other option is to head straight up to the cape on SH1 and spend Saturday night there.
Depending on whether we pushed on to the cape, or camped on the way; Sunday will involve either riding up to the cape and spending Sunday night there, or starting the journey back down along 90 mile beach and then either another night camping on the way back down south or head straight back to Auckland/Hamilton.

But this is not set in stone and of course we can play it by ear to make sure everyone's happy with the plan.

I imagine you'd have a great time on 90 mile beach with your DRZ

Yeah that'd work, perhaps meet up on Friday night or Saturday morning at the campsite and then whatever ends up happening you could head back on Sunday. Would still be a decent trip.

Did I not show you my sausage sizzler when you visited? How rude of me.

I love the Old Russell Road, t'is twisty & scenic. Gravel lovers can turn off & have a squirt through the forest on the original Old Russell Road & ferry dodgers can ride the gravel of Waikare Road. Lots of fun.

You keep mentioning riding 90 mile beach. On your spurt bikes? Then video is a must!

Then continue on up to Russell on Saturday and push on to the cape if we feel like it (or ride to the cape the following day). Stay Saturday (or sunday) night at the cape and then head back down 90 mile beach and make our way back home. If we made it to the cape on the saturday, then maybe take an extra day on the way back down. If not then do it in one day. Pretty flexible timetable and we'll be mostly playing it by ear with regard to where we are stopping for the night.

You guys still looking for more candidates? Might be keen to come along, will let you know by the time - depending on if the GN250 is ready to go by then, and of course with a rack!
