    F you windows 2000

a 'mate of mine' just formatted his hard drive with a backup drive to restore all his valuable 'data' files

unfortuantly on his reinstall of windows 2000 it decided to fucking format the third partition and install onto that (he was off having a smoke) he just lost 7GB of music and all his personal docs. lukily he has a 6 pack to consoul him but FUCK whats the deal with directx needing to 'validate you have a registered version of windows'

    man....
running an illegal OS is getting harder and harder

Been there done that. yes linux free but linux is harder to use.

we could easily go into a debate how linux is better than windows and yes in many ways it is. but for most people (I know several linux to windows converts) windows its just easier (im hitting myself for saying that)

also good games just dont run nicely on linux. im sorry.

    Talking partitions.
Can someone tell me how to increase the size off my C:/?

    I have one 10Gb hard disk, partitioned at 2Gb C:/ and 8 Gb D:/.

I would like to take 1 Gb from D:/ and add into C:/.

    Running window 98SE.

    Thanks.

    Arrow LOL.

If you thinkthat 2000 is an arse, you should check out Me. Its the biggest pisser that Ive come accross. Linux, not my scene and I could never understand the hassle with SP2 as everytime there was a hassle there was also a solution. However in saying that, should I ever have to reformat my desktop, it'll be 98se. Runs on any half decient computer like a cut cat. I also see that much like new gaming software, that new OS need so much more resources to run well. Don't see the point and the whole authentication/registration concept of XP had me seeing red. No worries though. Have a legit version of 98se and can still update it. Will be a total hassle when they stop the updates, although if I save them all prior, hopefully all will be sweet.

You can use a dos program called 'fdisk. On reboot insert the 98 startup floopy disk, menu will appear, select "without cd-rom support".

After the A:\> prompt, type "fdisk", and follow the instructions.

Using fdisk you could have to reformat the patitions, (which means installing windows again). Same procedure as above, after the command prompt, type: format c:

    Another program is patition magic.

Make sure you backup your files.

Do be aware that fdisk WILL erase ALL data in the partition . And it is very easy to get confused and erase all data on the whole disk. But certainly, all data on C: and D: WILL be erased. You will have to reinstall Windows and reload everything.

Partition Magic can SOMETIMES shuffle the partitions without losing data. But don't rely on it. make sure that anything you would not want to lose is backed up to a separate , other physical hard drive. And disconnect the power to that drive. I never trust a backup on the same physical volume. Even if whatever you are doing doesn't clobber your backup partition, I've known the partition table to be erased.

Backup, backup, backup, and then just to be on the safe side, backup all the backups. On separate media. And do a trial restore BEFORE deleting data. and verify the backups. And make sure that the backup is meaningful. A simple copy often won't work. You can copy the files back but the programs won't run. And even a backup using something like MS Backup won't work if you restore to a system with different hardware geometry.

You can make a very good estimate of how long a sysadmin has been in the game by the size of his backup cupboard. Huge cabinet, full, he's been there and has the scars.

Be afraid, folks, be very afraid.

Everybody agrees about Malevolent Edition. Yeah, for a simple home user, 98Se was probably the best Windows. Adequate for the purpose, could do everything needed and not bloated out by the inclusion of a lot of stuff that's not relevant to home users.

Thing was , Microsoft didn't want to have to maintain two operating systems. They couldn't strategically drop NT4 the "business" level OS. So they dropped Win98 - and tried to hide the fact by calling NT5 Windows 2000. If you look at the technical info, Windows 2000 is always descrinbed as NT5. XP is NT5a.

XP Home is just a crippled XP Professional, which in turn is NT4 with some tweaks. Good for business, but a pain for home users.
