Converting International Drivers Permit to NZ License?

I currently have a full motorbike license and car learner's license. I am traveling to Norway for 6 months next year, and I intend to apply for an international driver's permit through the AA before I go so I can drive legally while in Norway. I do not know exactly how the conversion works so I am unsure if the IDP will result in a full motorbike, learner car license or just a full license in general. I am hoping that it will mean I am given a FULL international driver's permit and that I can bring that back to NZ and convert it to a FULL NZ drivers license.

My question is, on my return to New Zealand, is it possible to convert the international driver's permit to a full motorbike AND full car NZ License?

I know there used to be workarounds in the past, especially with Rarotonga but have the loopholes been closed? I don't have my hopes high as it seems too good to be true, but it's worth a shot...

    Thanks

I got an AA IDL a few years ago for moving to Aussie. It wasn't worth the $9 I paid as the Aussie popo didn't recognize it.
A lot of overseas countries (USA for one) have a reciprocity arrangement with NZ and allow visitors to drive in their country using their NZ license for up to a year.

Only full licences can be used in a IDL, everything else is ignored.

Your licence is not converted, it's simply an additional permit that is internationally recognised. You still need to carry your NZ licence with you. Part of this is that the foreign country may not understand how NZ licencing works, hence the international permit.

As such, upon returning, you continue using your existing licence, there is no conversion process.

Went through something almost identical. Got my car learners in late 2005, figured by that by the time I could sit the restricted I'd have done some driving... not really. Went to USA in 2011 for a motorcycle trip, organised an IDL, so it was motorcycle only.

Finally got my car restricted February this year as the boss was going away, so I had to drive occasionally. Did the full 3 months later

Yeah I've had the car learners for nearly 5 years now, no car to drive means no reason to do test. I should be saving up for a bigger bike anyway...
