Newbie looking for a scooter/moped

Hi, I've recently moved back to Auckland and want a more cost-effective mode of transport and I 'm wanting to find out about scooters.

I read a whole forum from 2008 about advice on what and what not to get. It was pretty helpful and what I've gleaned is: you get what you pay for, reliable and well known makes and models are the best (European more than Asian if looking at decent longevity), recommended were Yamaha Jog and Honda Today.

On Trademe at the moment the most reasonably priced, ~$1,300, and most common is a Honda Dio 1989-2000, sold by personal vendors and a Honda dealer.

What is your advice generally? What do you know about the Honda Dio? Do you recommend others? And what work is involved in derestricting a bike (I'm assuming this makes it go faster)?

Well I like old school scooters like Honda C50 with gearbox and chain.
Too much maintainace on CVT scooters
And it could be quite easy to upgrade a C50 with a modern carb like a Keihin with an accelerator pump

Wow... really polite people here.

I just got myself a Honda Today... with the prices on trademe I just thought screw it I will get a new one and sell it when ever I leave Auckland and get back a good portion of it.. and have it warranted and all that.

I am pretty happy with it. Not the best acceleration but it will beat all the cars (and big bikes just by the by for the tough guys out there

) in rush hour traffic.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm looking for something with some carriage space. But man that's definitely a good price. I don't want to have to get a licence and pay the extra costs either so 50cc's my limit. I'm not much of a mechanic so do-ups aren't gonna be any good for me!hehe Thanks for your help though.

Oh congrats! Where did you get it from? Dealer or trademe?

Got it from Honda... scooters seem to sell second hand for so much... not sure why... so I just bit the bullet and got a new one.

Yeah, I was thinking that way too - going straight to dealer. Was that a Honda dealer specialising in motorcycles/scooters? Which city?

In Auckland. Botany bay area. Yeah they sell motorbikes and scooters - not the car dealer. I also considered getting a Suzuki, but I just liked the look of the Honda more... and it was maybe $100 cheaper.. but having ridden both seem much of a muchness. It is pretty basic but should keep running for years.

By the way - do you have motorbike license or were you looking for something you can ride on car license?

No motorbike license and don't want the added costs of a bigger engine. Is that Botany, East Auckand? It sounds like you've come to much the same conclusions as I have. Go with a dealer, buy new, reliable brand, expect reasonable longevity.
