Is it soundstorm (nf2 nvidia proprietry sound) or AC97/VIA whatever etc?

In the AC97 codec sound properties (where you adjust all the levels without the taskbar controls) there should be a swap sub/mic inputs checkbox I THINK in the speaker test part but I'm not sure.

That can't be true surround... one jack is only two positives and one negative if it complies with normal plug specifications - giving only two channels of sound.

I think drivers or something have screwed up.

The drivers disk from the mobo / sound card will have extra software to allow this.. if I recall correctly..

you are right its not 5.1 its just stereo with every 5.1 speaker playing the same stuff. IE: sounds like shite
