"Allow the engine oil to circulate before riding"?

My new Suzuki 250's manual says to allow 'sufficient' idling time after a warm or cold engine start before applying load or revving the engine.

What's a sufficient time in this context? The time it takes to put gloves and a helmet on?

Couple of mins relaxed riding time usually. Idling it in the drive doesn't actually warm it up a whole heap.

Its actually very little to do with the oil, and more important to warm your rear tyre!
Stand the bike up straight with the front wheel against a wall, rev as far as it will go with the clutch in and first selected, then drop it, not release, drop, flick your fingers off the clutch lever like your shooting a bow.

In about 2 minutes your tyre, engine and gearbox will be as warm as theyre gonna get.

Hey Magneto, I Just let idle as long as it takes to put my helmet / gloves on & get my leg over (approx. 20 secs) or just long enough to hold idle, then hit the road. A couple of mins relaxed riding will do the rest... just don't red line it until up to temp.

About the only bike I warm up these days is the old side valve R71. It runs like crap until the carbs are warmed and flushed and the choke is in.

Modern bikes just need a few seconds for the oil pressure to go up and for all the critical internals to be lubricated.
