I have a mate that builds things like that. Thing about those sort of setups is you end up breaking things that become a pain in the arse to upgrade and ultimately a limiting factor... input shafts... transfer cases... blocks... good stuff like that. All you end up with for five figures is a basically unusable heap of shite. Surprisingly long list of people who'll pay for that dubious privledge though.

I just wonder if that vid is a fake.

I never knew a speedo could jump as fast as it does on that.

presumably due to the wheels spinning, not true SOG

Yeah, wheelspin. Speedo's jumping and pausing for a while then taking off again after a shift.

You could always have a custom map that limits boost in lower gears... but where would the fun be in that.

Alternatively put a set of slicks on it, warm them up, and start turning various parts of the drivetrain into metal potpourri.

They should have done that to a mk5 Golf R32 or mk6 or 7 Golf R. Much, much nicer cars than a mk2.

No doubt it has been done. VW tuners are quite mad. What I like about this car is how standard it looks. It would not warrant a second glance for most people. Power & stealth. Great combination.
Eons ago, far, far away a mate of me dads had a relatively standard looking Beetle with a supercharged V8 in the back seat. Fatter back tires & the "boot" had a lip around it otherwise it just looked like a tatty half finished project in pale blue. It was his rally sprint car & nothing touched it on tarmac in a straight line. Corners were impressive but not that quick. Probably a brake thing, I was only ickle at the time so my memories are all tempered by the noise & mayhem of it all. Oh, it was road legal, too. He drove it to & from events frequently baiting Porches on the motorway.

Spare car is a Mk5 GTi, it's quick but has zero driver appeal. Good car for a girl.

One of the reasons I love my Nissan Stagea. It's just a fat old jappa wagon until you stand on the go pedal.

Maybe, but the mk5 onward are an infinitely nicer car than a mk2. As for performance, price and reliability I'd still take a bike any day if I want to go fast compared to an old, worn out car that's been fucked with to put out way more power than it was designed to.

That mk2 Golf is still a nice car though. I just wonder how long it's all going to last if driven hard regularly.
