I haven't written a speech for a few years. At one stage, in a past life, I wrote heaps of these -- about two a week on average for my then chairman and chief executive who were big time into public meetings of various sorts. Mostly start from scratch stuff each time too, with limited scope for cutting and pasting (the true power of the word processor!). The first speech of any consequence that I delivered myself was on my wedding day, which I think I started with some pathetic attempt at humour like "unaccustomed as I am to public speaking..."
