It's the universally accepted colour for motorcycles - from way back in the day. It just sells well.
Motorcycle colours are interesting - I find white only suits a few bikes, and when on the right bike it can be stunning. Works on the speed/street triples well, not so on a Bussa (unless you like the look of a massive sperm heading down the road).
I get daily e-mails from a couple of custom bike sites - every now and then a unsual (for a motorcycle) colour appears that works fantastically (I can immediately think of a olive green Ducati build - and a pale blue one for that matter).
For Trademe backyard builds - matt/satin black is the go-to because a dark flat colour will mask poor welds and panel work better than a coat of say red gloss.

"Did you ever stop, look at the bike, and think "Hey, it looks fine as is and I won't bugger it up?"
I am just being cruel now.

Have looked at the price. Gone right off it.
I'm doing a 'tracker' styled build, but I know it's gonna be worthless when it's done.
So, yeah. Full custom frame, swingarm triple clamps. Those wheels would be two grand and whatever brakes and m/cyls and the forks and shock. That tank is a thing of beauty as is the seat hump - which I think is the oil tank too.... $$ not sure of the practicality of that - warm arse.
Then we get into the fiddly bits like instruments and electrics and lights yeah - $25 to $30k US sounds about right.

For that sort of money I'd just buy a factory custom like a Thruxton. At least when you go to sell it don't have to answer silly comments ;-)
Saying that I'm reluctant to have 25K tied up in a toy I use on the odd weekend that will depreciate by 5 K in a matter of months.
I'm waiting for the Japanese imported ones.....
DeMyer's Laws - an argument that consists primarily of rambling quotes isn't worth bothering with.
Is it $1500 for that leather bag and five grand for the motorcycle?
