Honestly, I really do fail to get my head around why someone would spend so much on such an insignificant bike

I did my licence test on one of them, so a fairly significant bike in my life & I wouldn't be in it past a grand.

I'd not put down that coin but watch it hit $4500.

There will be a number of bidders who had one when they were teenagers all those years ago who would like one back in their stable. Then the Honda collectors wanting to add to the fleet, or start a fleet for that matter.

Retro is in, and Honda's at top of the list for obvious reasons - reliable, parts are available and the starting money is not silly compared to say a Norton Commando or the 'good' year Bonnies.

I see on TM there are two unrestored BSA Bantams going for about $5k for the pair.

Here is a google image of the concept - the NZ one I remember was low and purposeful looking. I must search what they use diff wise to reverse the engine.

Update - apparently all you do is flip the crown wheel.

Actually I'd like one. If it was designed right.
what about putting diff in upside down ?

Can't be that easy! Hmm I'd need to check but I suspect the mounting holes/bolts would not align flipping it 180.

$5525.00....what price do you put on reliving youth. Should come with a crate of DB Export, some Flying Nun mixed tapes and snifters.
DeMyer's Laws - an argument that consists primarily of rambling quotes isn't worth bothering with.

I've gone back to early bikes I have owned and, whilst they seemed pretty outstanding in those days, it's all relative to what you are now used to.

Though the one thing I'd say about that Honda, is that always was a pretty light and nimble model. Most likely still good fun

Congrats to both the buyer and to the seller too.
