Thanks for the input guys. We already have a laptop, complete with keyboard dock and a second screen for when it is on the desk. This new purchase is just something to play on. Off to the shops I go

I have an Asus 11" notebook with the detachable screen you can use as a tablet. Sold my iPad as you can't use a USB stick and I wanted a proper touch pad. I am going to upgrade shortly so may be able to offer it to you. Come by and have a play with it.

I've got a samsung tab 3 for playing music and just doodling around on the internet, works fine. Mine's only a 7" which is marginal for readability, a bigger screen would be betterer but I'm a cheap bastard.

I have had a tablet for a while now. Got a Samsung 10.1 16GB and wifi only for some amount of money: it seemed cheap. I hate typing on the screen though so for posting on the internets it sucks though you can bluetooth a keyboard to it but then you are carrying two lumps of stuff around. Things it is GREAT for: slumped in a chair idly internet surfing and watching youtube and stuff while SWMBO watches Downton Abbey or something. I have the Zinio app and magazines in electronic format are REALLY cheap. I was buying that Classic Racer magazine for like $18 an issue in paper form and its ~$6 in electronic form. There is a book app also which i havent used.

I can tether it to my mobile phone when I am away and use it to surf the internet: great for maps and finding restaurants and brothels and swingers clubs. My phone might be smart but the screen is too friggin small to be useful.

I bought a crash case for ours which ups the heft but provides shock protection if you drop it or its travelling with you.

As a serious work tool its of limited use, but as a toy its very useful.

Ipad- our kids haven't managed to break or crash theirs despite loading every game and app you can think of. If you want to consume content use a tablet, if you want to produce anything use a laptop.

If you want a tablet and are not prepared to flash an aftermarket OS, then get a Nexus device as their plain version of Android is about the only OEM Android distro that doesn't make me want to throw the device out the window every time I use it. The rest of them are all bloated as fuck (just like most Android phones). Apple is great if you like paying twice as much as you should for outdated technology that is a generation or 2 behind the flagship competition, along with all the extra bullshit you get from them.

I suggest going for an android device (or ipad if thats your thing) but DON'T go for a windows tablet, I recently got a windows phone and they're in a world of their own. Problems arise instantly in the form of not being able to transfer contacts. You can't use the same game profile across different platforms. It's a whole new kettle of fish. Android is much much simpler to learn and use. There are plenty of free games and apps and just things that will amuse you and keep you content.

Im not a Mac fanboy by any means (I even admit to liking Windows 8) and the Apple way frustrates me sometimes but iPads are rock solid. I've had mine for 3 years its never crashed or slowed down despite my G/F kids best efforts to have all apps and games running at the same time. They thrash it for hours playing 3d games till the battery dies mid game - no dramas just plug it in and away it goes again. The newer ipads might look better but I have no need to update it - runs as fast as the day I got it - airplay through apple tv is awesome too...
