Rust holes need cut out first. Then (ideally) welded. Check the condition of the rest of the tank inside. Replacement may be the better option (E.mail a few wreckers)

Quick fixes seldom fix for good ... and can turn BAD really quickly.
Cheers. A visual inspection looks OK - some flaking, nothing too serious. The area around the hole seems to be the only weak spot but of course I can't be sure.

However, could this look like the root of the initial problem? The fuel filter was clear, the boots are firmly attached to the airbox and there don't look to be any cracks.

I found this little doohickey in need of a new mesh screen (it's attached to the throttle bodies I believe) but not sure if it could be causing the issues I've got

Also the plugs are in this kind of condition after 2.4Ks - any clues?

Right. You need to pull the carbs and strip them. That crap would have got everywhere. While your at it get the tank welded. Stick on shit wont last. The plugs look to have had a lot of crap on them so the rest of the motor would have done also. Throw an oil change in there for good measure.

I did pull this black cap off and the inside looked pristine - do you think pulling off a float bowl and inspecting that would give an indication of how badly it needed cleaning? Just to save pulling the whole lot out.

Any recommendations to get some welding done?

Thanks again for your continued help!

Thats the diagram housing. Carbs need to be pulled right down and blown out or it will keep playing up.

Ask at your local/usual bike shop ... if you haven't got one ... get one.
