    Speedo cable/front sprocket query

So, before my Crash, the Speedo stopped working (no biggie, just ride off the Revs) but seeing as I am reparing my bike I figured I would replace the speedo cable (assumed this was the problem)

However pulling off the plastic Chain cover off, I am presented with a conundrum -

There is a sticky outy bit, which one would assume would slot into the bolt that holds the Front sprocket in place, but I just have a smooth bolt.

So I am wondering - is this correct and the speedo is driven just by the friction of the sticky outy bit on the Bolt head? or should it actually slot in?

At the lower end of the cable is the speedometer drive gear box. At the upper end of the cable is the speedometer. Usually, it's the cable that breaks, but sometimes (perhaps this is what happened to yours) the gear box becomes dried out and the worm gear inside it will wear out. You can't buy the gears by themselves, so you will have to replace the whole speedo drive gear box assembly. Likewise, if any part of the speedo cable is broken, you've got to replace the whole cable.

Yeah do have to say that is a pretty crap post in terms of information given.
