If she does you may well be limited in scope; if not, perhaps a relocation to another town would improve your chances of finding work) and I do endorse the "take no shit" attitude. I used to put up with a lot of crap until my self worth finally asserted itself and I quit that job. In my current job I will not stand for the sort of crap you are experiencing.

If you go over his head and he gives you Hell for the next week, document everything and hand it straight back up to his superior. It sounds like you are heading towards a point where mediation or Employment Tribunal action may be called for - do not fool yourself, what is happening is serious: you are being bullied and coerced and he is using bullying tactics to attempt to dissuade you to stand up for yourself (giving you grief for a week for going over his head is "controlling behaviour") he is clearly breaking Labour laws by failing to take yor health and safety into account (the problems you have reaching the board, and the issues you have with the meths fumes) and using the aforementioned bullying.

Tell him firmly but politely "No", stating your reasons - not in your JD, injurous to your health etc and if he throws a tantrum, write out a full incident report covering what he has asked you to do, your grounds for refusal and his subsequent attempts to intimidate you into submission and send the written report to his boss. Then it becomes official. They will have to take action. He will then probably give you more shit. Stay firm, write it down and give the reports to his boss.

Look after yourself, you're the only "you" you've got. Remember, you're worth too much to put up with abuse.

*starts writting that now* Usually work isn't this bad... As mentioned I've been here 3 years or so, and whole time this one guy has been my boss, he has always used the bully tatic, not just with me, to get his way... most times I give him shit back and stand my ground... but the last 3 weeks at work have been crazy as hell, we're expanding to 5 new small citys/towns in NZ, plus Aussie and the UK. We've increased the staff in our department alone by 25 newbies... with the extra workloads and extra hours and so much agro and stress at work I've had it up to my eye balls...

*would love to miss work tomorrow... but then I'd just have double the work to do the next day... so I'd only be screwing myself...

Do not take on the blame for his choices. If I ask you to do something and you exercise your right to refuse on whatever grounds, how I feel about it is entirely my own responsibility, not yours. If I choose to get shitty and treat you like crap, that is my own crappy, immature nature and has nothing to do with you.

Likewise, his choice to get "pissed off" and act like a total wanker is not your fault. You are allowed to make decisions concerning your life, health etc.

You don't "piss him off". You do what you feel is appropriate, that is all. All subsequent feelings and actions on his part are his own concern. (You are allowed to choose to feel angry if his actions are abusive or an attempt to control you and the choice is yours whether to endure it or tell him to fuck himself or report his abuse to his boss.)

With the migrane thing... just to let you know how this guy works...

Last time I did the boards I got a headache... and thought "ok not too bad..." and those of you who get migranes will know... you can tell the difference between a headache... and a headache that is turning into a migrane... you can feel it coming on. And after a while my headache started turning into a migrane and I went and asked him if I could leave before it turned into a migrane otherwise I'd have to taxi home because I won't even be able to walk to the bus stop, let alone ride my bike... and he said "don't try to get out of work just because you have a hangover". And you can all ask crashe how much I drink... 1 beer lasts me ALL night, and I don't even finish it.

When the headache had almost turned into a migrane I went to him again, and said I wasn't bullshitting, I wasn't hung over, I felt sick and was in a LOT of pain... almost in tears... and he said "don't lie, your not going home". I called up HR and told him what was happening and asked what would happen if I just got up and left... he said "thats abandament (sp) of job", however, HR did come up and seeing me almost in tears, totally pale and almost unable to stand up... said I could leave... and yes my boss gave me shit for over a week for going over his head to HR... that was last year some time, and he still throws it in my face now and then...

Well I've just spoken to the Marketing Director, and explained to him what my boss wanted me to do, explained my current workload, pointed out the OSH issues of the task I was asked to do, and also pointed out that this was outside the lines of my job description and he agreed with me, said I didn't have to do it, and that he had more advertising for me to do today, so he couldn't afford for me to being doing trivel (sp) stuff that our team leaders should be doing...
