Good on you. Make sure you document what he said while it is fresh in your mind, get it down on paper and presesnt it to HR - abusing you, calling you a liar and swearing at you (make sure you write down what he said verbatim, HR are supposed to have broad shoulders and if they cannot deal with obscene language quoted in a report, they shouldn't be there) are all offences and warrant disciplinary action. Seriously stick it to him, make sure he knows that his actions and words have consequences. Get him scared for once to see how he likes it. Bring down the wrath of the HR dept on his head and threaten to take it as far as you can go unless something is done about his bullying, abuse and swearing.
If HR says they can't take it too far, inform them that you will have no recourse but to seek independant means e.g. Employment Tribunal. Set a timeframe by which time you expect to see the matter resolved.
